Licensed Psychologist
Brief History
After returning to New York City from Iowa, Bill became director of the Adult Clinic and Diagnostic Center in New York City. The distinguished faculty of this clinical group included Oliver Sachs, neurologist and Max Bruck, psychiatrist. Bill then became Chief of Service of the Intensive Care Unit of Adolf Meyer Psychiatric Center.
Bill moved to Austin to become Director of Clinical Services of the Brown Schools, Ranch Treatment Center. This 120-bed psychiatric hospital specialized in providing state-of-the-art treatment to individuals with severe behavior problems.
Bill met and married Tina, also a licensed psychologist, in Austin. They have been in private practice together ever since. They have two children: David is studying to be a psychologist at the University of Houston, and Emily works for the World Bank in Washington, D.C.
Treatment Approach
Bill prefers a collaborative relationship between a client and a consultant to a medical relationship between a patient and a doctor. Medical problems are resolved by the physician, who plays the active role; the patient's primary responsibility is to comply with the doctor's orders.
Psychological problems [including, depression, anxiety, anger] as well as incentive use problems [including obesity, problem drinking, drug and pornography use, gambling, shopping, etc] tend to have poor outcome because of the high relapse rates. From Bill's perspective, the primary goal of the client-therapist relationship to good long-term outcome as the client defines it. For mood and addictive disorders, that generally involves enabling the client to perform as intended despite the influence of local stressors and temptations.
